The NGS Education Foundation (with 50+ affiliate organizations embedded in major U.S. Universities and elsewhere) was dated and inefficient.

Such affiliates were delivering low results against a goal of producing inspiring programs for teachers and administrators in the K-12 education system to incorporate geography as a basis for young people to better understand world systems.

Our Role

9-Year Engagement

NPL was hired by National Geographic to rethink the entire foundation design, its granting criteria, and incentives to inspire innovative solutions among affiliates, including use of updated educational technology and content delivery systems.

Once we helped design a new, nation-wide affiliate model, our team also helped NGS to implement its role out and a change management process. This happened as NGS was brining on new venture partners to reposition its global brand with new media and content distribution channels.

“I engaged NPL on a very high-profile project at the National Geographic Society, based on their previous professionalism and effective work with our network. This project was of such importance that their credentials went all the way to the CEO and governing board. The Society was looking to transition a 30-year-old legacy network into a 21st Century educator community.

We asked NPL to review analysis done by the Harvard Graduate School of Education and create a strategic implementation plan. The plan included multiple elements of organizational design including support in creating the new network design, a communication plan, and an implementation plan. This was anything but simple. Strong emotions, new management desires, and competing ideas were all a part of the process. Jim and Laurie were outstanding, always available, and their experience and finesse truly created a smooth transition. They knew just how to handle bumps and frankly, anticipated the vast majority of possible issues, thus creating a truly proactive and much easier transition.”
